How to DIY Norway in a Nutshell (with tips and a map!)
Updated: Aug 4, 2022
If you have a limited time in Norway, the Norway in a Nutshell route is a very good idea. It visits Norway's biggest city Oslo, its second biggest city Bergen and takes the most scenic possible route along the Norwegian fjords on the way. Have a look at my guide to a weekend in Norway for more.
An easy guide to ticket purchases
Note that ticket prices are for our travel in April 2022. For the latest prices have a look at https://www.vy.no/en and https://www.norwaysbest.com
Tips to book tickets
Book independently rather than through the tour website: All up we saved about 2,100 NOK (£180) per person but booking ourselves so I highly recommend going down this route. You can book everything in English so it’s very accessible
Book early to get the lowest fares
Book all train tickets on https://www.vy.no/en

Tips for planning your route
I recommend starting with a search on the official Norway in a Nutshell website to check the route and timings that will work from you. This will give you a good basis to work off when booking your own tickets
If you book return flights to Oslo and you have 4 days to play with you can take a train back from Bergen to Oslo. A 7 hour train from Bergen to Oslo may sound exhausting but the views are wonderful
Which side to sit
You will get wonderful views throughout your trip, but if you book early I recommend the following sides of the train
Oslo - Myrdal: Left side
Myrdal - Flam: Either side (slight advantage to the left)
Bergen - Oslo: Right side
