A Review of Marriott Hotels in Australia

I started my career as a travelling management consultant in Australia. For the first year and a half I travelled mostly to Melbourne for work using primarily Hyatt and Marriott hotels. Later, my partner became a travelling consultant himself and stayed in Marriott hotels in Canberra. As a result, we've been lucky enough to visit a lot of Marriotts down under and wanted to share the best of them with you.

The hotels reviewed range from luxury (on corporate budget) to budget (on our own budget) but I can confidently say there isn't a hotel on this list that I would not recommend to a friend.

Melbourne

Sheraton Melbourne (Booking link)

5 | ~US$200/ night

I stayed here early in my travelling career so I don't have many pictures, but I did take many memories

The highlights:

  • Very well located

  • The indoor pool is great

  • Very functional and smart

The lowlights:

  • The Sheraton feels very business-y especially from Monday - Thursday so it may not be your first choice for a romantic midweek getaway

Elite benefits

  • There isn't an executive lounge at the Sheraton Melbourne however you will get free breakfast in the Collins Street Kitchen

Four Points Docklands, Melbourne (Booking link)

4 | ~US$160/ night

I stayed here on a few occasions while working in the Docklands of Melbourne

The highlights:

  • More affordable than centrally located Melbourne hotels

  • The views of the Docklands, especially of the Star Observation wheel

The lowlights:

  • This is a more functional hotel, so don't expect too many bells and whistles

Elite benefits

  • Breakfast in the hotel restaurant

Sydney

Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park (Booking link)

5 ★ | ~US$200/ night

We cashed in a mix of points and awards to stay here for our wedding night (and most of the following day). We were upgraded to a beautiful corner terrace suite where we enjoyed the last views of Hyde Park before leaving to the UK.

The highlights:

  • The entryway is an icon in Sydney`

  • Relating pool and jacuzzi

  • Perfectly located to explore Sydney (if you can bring yourself to leave the hotel)

The lowlights:

  • I honestly can't think of any

Elite benefits

  • The lounge bathed in natural light and benefiting from views across to Hyde Park was amazing. The evening canapés were very generous and diverse including a dessert offering

  • Breakfast is served at the restaurant and is wonderful

Pier One Sydney Harbour, Autograph Collection (Booking link)

5 ★ | ~US$200/ night

We found a great deal to enjoy a birthday staycation at the nautical inspired Pier One Sydney.

The highlights:

  • The proximity to Sydney Harbour and the Opera house allowed for beautiful night time strolls

  • The lounge bar (and free elite perks drinks)

  • The view out to sea from our room

  • The nautical theme

The lowlights:

  • The lack of club lounge (but the bar drinks compensated for this)

Elite benefits

  • Free drink in the lounge bar

  • Breakfast in the hotel restaurant (including a fairly rare offering of churros)

Canberra

Midnight Hotel Autograph Collection, Canberra (Booking link)

5 ★ | ~US$160/ night

My husband stayed in the Midnight hotel for about 4 months while working in Canberra. I joined on a few occasions. Since I spent this time working, I don't have many photos except of the wonderful breakfast offering

The highlights:

  • Centrally located

  • The generous breakfast menu (there's something about ordering breakfast that often beats a buffet; nb this may have been due to Covid)

The lowlights:

  • No hotel lounge

Elite benefits

  • Breakfast in the hotel restaurant, Braddon Merchant

Queensland

Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Port Douglas (Booking link)

5 ★ | ~US$500/ night

The highlights:

  • Likely one of the best resorts in Port Douglas, this hotel has it all - multiple pools, lounging areas and a beautiful breakfast restaurant

  • The pool areas are beautiful and warm - this is a huge benefit because it's not always safe to swim in the beaches of Port Douglas

The lowlights:

  • Really, none

Elite benefits

  • Breakfast in the hotel restaurant
