5 Tips for your Cotswolds Weekend Break
Updated: Aug 4, 2022
1. Drive
Driving will give you the best flexibility and scope to adventure. Roads are also very grand-tour-esque for those who are looking for rolling hills and narrow, high speed “highways”
2. Pre-book restaurants
The most famous lunch spots (especially the Porch inn) fill up on weekends, especially for Sunday roasts. Pre-booking will ensure you’re not disappointed
3. Travel during shoulder season
I visited the Cotswolds in winter and think it would be beautiful at any time of the year. If you travel off-peak what you lose on weather will be gained in serenity due to an utter lack of crowds
4. Consider staying outside The Cotswolds
We stayed in a hotel in Swindon, which is a 30 minute drive to The Cotswolds proper. This was a much more economical decision because Cotswolds hotels can be ££. The extra drive also isn’t too big an issue because regardless of where you’ll stay you’ll have to drive to visit the various villages. A shoutout to the Marriott in Swindon, which gave us a lovely suite upgrade and offered a really reasonable breakfast selection
5. Take rain boots/ gumboots/ wellingtons
If you want to see The Cotswolds properly you’ll have to walk through rural areas and that means mud. If you don’t want to behave like the clowns we were, walking through mud in white sneakers, invest in a pair of gumboots.
